During a virtual event on August 25th, hosted by Classrooms Without Borders and the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, Wolf Gruner, the Shappel-Guerin Chair in Jewish Studies at USC, presented new research that challenges the long-standing view of Jews as passive victims during the Holocaust. In his book, Resisters: How Ordinary Jews Fought Persecution in Hitler’s Germany, Gruner reveals that Jews resisted Nazi persecution in varied ways—tearing down propaganda, defying anti-Jewish laws, and organizing petitions. His findings show that acts of resistance were more widespread and diverse than previously understood, offering a new perspective on Jewish defiance under Nazi rule.
