Thursday, July 2 – By Meg Frank

We started the day by taking the train to Nurnberg. First we were given a tour of the former Nazi rally grounds, including the massive Congress Hall which was being built to hold 50,000 people to attend a yearly rally. The building, designed to mimic the Roman Colosseum , was never finished due to the start of the war. Now the building is in the midst of a renovation. It is too expensive to tear down yet for the past 80 years, the city has not decided on a use for the building. Presently an opera is being built inside the hall.

We then went to the Nurnberg courthouse or the Nurnberg Palace of Justice, where we were given a thorough tour of the infamous trials. That night we were treated to an impromptu tour given by a new friend, Corrine Tucker, who leads a human rights organization titled Let Them Dream. She gave us a tour of old town and led us to the monument for the Great Synagogue of Nurnberg which was destroyed before the November Pogrom of 1938. Finally, we all spent the night enjoying the town.
