Archaeological site filled with amazing mosaics. We concentrated on the synagogue. It is believed to be one of the first synagogues after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD. Now Judaism has to consider how to adapt to not having a central place for gathering and praying as the Temple provided. Tzippori, located in the Galilee, presented an opportunity to create a new manner of being Jewish…with synagogues, a smaller place to gather and worship. This large mosaic comprised of three sections: one of the story of Isaac, another of the Zodiac, and one of the holidays. There’s writing in Hebrew, even a spelling mistake, and Greek.
We also visited the site of a wealthy citizen’s house. The large mosaic had the image of a woman, referred to as the Mona Lisa of Tzippori, images of Dionysus, and place markers for where couches or cushions would be located.
