SUMMARY:The 80th Anniversary of the “Zivia Conference” at Kibbutz Yagur: Testimony\, Resistance\, and Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:This special Talking Memory program marks the 80th anniversary of the “Zivia Conference\,” held at Kibbutz Yagur in June 1946\, and explores the enduring power of first-person testimony in shaping our understanding of rescue\, resistance\, and moral responsibility after the Holocaust. \nAt the heart of the program is Zivia Lubetkin — a leader of the Jewish underground in Nazi-occupied Warsaw\, a central figure in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising\, and later a prominent voice in the postwar Yishuv. At the United Kibbutz Movement committee gathering at Yagur\, Lubetkin delivered her searing testimony about the destruction of Polish Jewry\, the struggle for resistance\, and the human realities behind a history that was only beginning to be understood. \nOur first speaker\, Lori Weintrob\, will present insights drawn from three decades of scholarship on women and the Holocaust. Her talk will explore ways of teaching about Zivia Lubetkin and other “heroines of the Holocaust\,” whose words and actions continue to inspire new generations. Focusing on Lubetkin’s testimony as both a historical document and a moral legacy\, the presentation will encourage educators\, historians\, and the broader public to reconsider approaches to Holocaust and genocide education\, as well as contemporary efforts to confront global antisemitism. \nBatya Brutin will examine how Zivia Lubetkin has been commemorated visually and culturally over the decades. Despite Lubetkin’s central role in the youth movements in Poland\, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising\, the founding of Kibbutz Lohamei HaGeta’ot\, and her testimony at the Eichmann trial\, her visual representation remains surprisingly limited. Her image appears in paintings\, murals\, stamps\, and memorial works in both Israel and Poland — sometimes alongside her husband\, Yitzhak (“Antek”) Zuckerman\, sometimes as part of a collective of fighters\, and at times as an individual figure. Across these depictions\, artists consistently emphasize her determination\, resilience\, and inner strength. \nRuth Kupperberg will read selections from the words and testimony of Zivia Lubetkin\, highlighting her resistance and heroism. The excerpts shared will illuminate the bravery of a young woman during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the enduring lessons of courage we can draw from her story today. \nRegister at the Zoom link below.

SUMMARY:Talking Memory program marking the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
DESCRIPTION:The Ghetto Fighters’ House invites you to a special\nTalking Memory program marking\nthe 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising\nOpening Remarks\nYigal Cohen\, CEO Ghetto Fighters’ House \nJulia Mackiewicz\, Polish Institute in Tel Aviv \nRound Table: Remembering the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Israel \nGuest Speakers: \nTamar Herzberg – Yad Mordechai\nNoam Leibman – Moreshet\nAnat Bratman-Elhalel – Ghetto Fighters’ House \nKeynote Speaker: \nDr. Avinoam Patt \nThe Battle of Warsaw’s Jews: The Afterlife of the Revolt \nOn April 23\, 1943\, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency delivered the news of the Warsaw Ghetto Revolt\, relaying a report received in Stockholm the day before with the headline “Nazis Start Mass-Execution of Warsaw Jews on Passover; Victims Broadcast S.O.S.” The timing of the revolt\, taking place as it did in the spring of 1943\, the deadliest year of WWII for European Jewry\, influenced the manner in which it was reported\, interpreted\, and understood. Through an examination of the ways in which the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was reported in April and May of 1943\, we can begin to understand how and why the event was transformed into both a symbol of Jewish resistance\, Jewish sacrifice\, and Jewish martyrdom during and after World War II. Soon after the revolt was suppressed in May 1943\, representatives from the Jewish Labor Bund in New York and the Zionist movement in the Yishuv began to dispute both the heroes of the revolt and its true political and ideological significance. While historians have generally seen the politicization of the revolt occurring after the war\, with the first encounter of the survivors with their new homes\, the polemics of 1944 between the Bund and the Labor Zionists (with the role of the Revisionists left out of early narratives) makes clear that within one year of the revolt\, the battle for credit in Jewish public opinion meant the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was too great a symbol to relinquish to the political enemy. By the first anniversary after the Uprising (April 19\, 1944) Jewish communities organized solemn commemorations in New York\, London\, Tel Aviv and elsewhere to recall Warsaw as a “fortress of freedom” and as the “Masada of Warsaw.” Responding to this politicization during the war\, it was the surviving ghetto fighters themselves who would play a critical role in writing their own “three lines in history.” \nThis program is in partnership with the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv\, Moreshet Holocaust & Research Center\, Yad Mordechai Museum\, Classrooms Without Borders\, Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center\, and the Rabin Chair Forum at George Washington University.

SUMMARY:Let the World Read and Know": The Oneg Shabbat Archives
DESCRIPTION:The Ghetto Fighters’ House invites you to a new three part series marking the 75th Anniversary of the Jewish Historical Institute\n  \nThe Oneg Shabbat Archives and Beyond: Documenting and Preserving the History of European Jewry at the Jewish Historical Institute \n“Let the World Read and Know”: The Oneg Shabbat Archives \nOpening Remarks: \nMonika Krawczyk\, Director of the Jewish Historical Institute (JHI) \nGuest Speakers: \nDr. Natalia Aleksiun  \nWho were they?  Emanuel Ringelblum and the Oneg Shabbat Writers  \nDr. Katarzyna Person   \nThe Ringelblum Archive and the Jewish Historical Institute \nFrom the moment that its existence became widely known\, the Ringelblum Archive (also known as the Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto) was widely regarded as a collection of unusual significance. Under the initiative of historian Emanual Ringelblum\, a group of social activists incarcerated in the Warsaw Ghetto created the archive between 1940 and 1943 with the aim to document the persecution of Jews in occupied Poland. Emulating the working principles of YIVO (Yidisher Visnshaftlekher Institut\, Yiddish Scientific Institute)\, the Warsaw group gathered and produced a total of 35\,000 pages of documents\, in Polish\, Yiddish\, Hebrew\, and German and stowed them away secretly within the Ghetto. Among the documents were diaries\, accounts from approximately 300 Jewish communities from the whole territory of occupied Poland\, school essays\, research works\, and official German documents: like posters\, identification cards\, and food ration cards. There were also some 70 photographs and over 300 drawings and paintings.  \nThe Archive was retrieved in parts from the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto: Part I (concealed on August 3\, 1942) was found on September 18\, 1946\, and Part II (concealed in early February 1943) was found on December 1\, 1950.   \nWho were the people who created this archive?  Dr. Natalia Aleksiun will share with us her research on the main contributors to one of the most important archives that was written as the events were happening.  \nIn her presentation\, Dr. Katarzyna Person will discuss the academic significance of the archive and the methods used to bring this extraordinary collection to the wider public.  \nThis program is in partnership with the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw\, the Polish Institute in Tel-Aviv\, the Grodzka Gate – NN Theatr in Lublin\, the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center\, Classrooms without Borders\, and the Rabin Chair Forum at George Washington University.  \n2 PM EST | 7 PM GMT | 8 PM SAST | 9 PM Israel

SUMMARY:The Ghetto Fighters' House Talking Memory Series presents: Treasure Hunt: Finding the Lost Art Legacy of David Friedmann
DESCRIPTION:The Ghetto Fighters’ House Talking Memory Series presents: \nCrafting Heritage: The Art of Holocaust Remembrance – \nA Homage to David Friedmann \nJoin us on Sunday\, July 10th\, for the fourth and final program: \nTreasure Hunt:  Finding the Lost Art Legacy of David Friedmann \nGuest Speakers: \nMiriam Friedmann Morris in conversation with Liz Elsby \nDavid Friedmann’s (1893-1980) life’s work was Nazi-looted: oil paintings\, watercolors\, drawings\, etchings and lithographs. From childhood\, Morris was drawn into her father’s epic life story\, learning about his passion for art\, his Holocaust experiences\, and strong will to survive. Friedmann’s pursuit of justice inspired her quest to search for his lost art. With each new find\, she gained insights into his life\, an extraordinary view of his productive career amidst the rich\, cultural life before Hitler. Each and every artwork tells a story\, documents an event or captures the essence of a moment lost in time. Friedmann continues to live after his death via the passionate insistence of his art to emerge and be rescued from obscurity. \nThis program is in partnership with Classrooms Without Borders\, Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center\, and the Jewish Historical Institute.

SUMMARY:The Ghetto Fighters' House Talking Memory Series presents: Artist as Witness: The Holocaust Art of David Friedmann in the Lodz Ghetto
DESCRIPTION:The Ghetto Fighters’ House Talking Memory Series presents: \nArtist as Witness:  The Holocaust Art of David Friedmann in the Lodz Ghetto \nGuest Speaker: \nMiriam Friedmann Morris \nDavid Friedmann (1893-1980) depicted human fate as a refugee in Prague\, as a prisoner in the Lodz Ghetto\, in the Auschwitz subcamp Gleiwitz I\, and as a survivor. During his three years in the Ghetto\, he absorbed the unending misery he witnessed. With death before his eyes\, through hunger and sickness\, he worked strenuously on a series of artwork documenting the infernal daily struggle of the prisoners’ desperate situation. He wrote and illustrated a diary to publish at war’s end. He felt that\, unless one had lived it\, no one would believe the brutal inhumanity against the Jews. His art and diary would be his testimony\, but they were destroyed. Torn out from his memory he produced a new art series to show to the world in the hope that such barbarism would never happen again. \n2 PM EST | 7 PM GMT | 8 PM SAST | 9 PM Israel \nThis program is in partnership with Classrooms Without Borders\, Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center\, and the Jewish Historical Institute.

SUMMARY:The Ghetto Fighters' House Talking Memory Series presents: Artistic Representations of the Plight of the Elderly in Terezin\, 1942-1944
DESCRIPTION:The Ghetto Fighters’ House  Talking Memory Series presents:\nCrafting Heritage: The Art of Holocaust Remembrance – A Homage to David Friedmann\nJoin us on Sunday\, June 12th \, for the second program\nArtistic Representations of the Plight of the Elderly in Terezin\, 1942-1944\nGuest Speaker: Liz Elsby\nThe Nazi ghetto of Theresienstadt (Terezin in Czech) near Prague\, is often remembered for the incredible cultural endeavors of its Jewish inmates: in appalling conditions and in the shadow of deportations to death\, the Jews there created art\, held concerts and plays\, and performed operas such as ‘ Brundibar” . \nIn reality\, almost 34\,000 people\, the majority them elderly German and Austrian Jews\, died of disease\, starvation\, and neglect withing the ghettos walls; thousands more were among the 88\,000 deported to the death camps from the ghetto. \nToday\, most of these elderly men and women remain unremembered ghosts\, whose lives\, and suffering would have been forgotten by history had not an incredible group of Theresienstadt artists felt compelled to secretly draw their plight. \nIn this talk\, we will examine the artwork these brave artists created in that hellish place and by doing so\, we will give a face to these faceless victims\, and remember their humanity. \nThis program is in partnership with Classrooms Without Borders\, Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center\, Beit Terezin\, and the Jewish Historical Institute.

SUMMARY:Talking Memory: Checkmate: Making\, Playing and Picturing Chess in the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Crafting Heritage: The Art of Holocaust Remembrance – A Homage to David Friedmann\nJoin us on Sunday\, May 15th\, for the first program: \nCheckmate: Making\, Playing and Picturing Chess in the Holocaust \n \nGuest Speaker: Dr. Rachel Perry \nChess was played\, made and pictured during the Holocaust by individuals in extremis. As practice\, chess offered victims a means of distraction\, entertainment\, and community building. With great skill and ingenuity\, chess boards and pieces were fashioned out of folded paper\, carved out of wood and modeled out of bread. When escape routes were closed off and the endgame seemed near\, chess allowed artists to symbolize their feelings of agency and entrapment\, as both players and pawns. \nThis program is in partnership with Classrooms Without Borders\, Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center\, and the Jewish Historical Institute.

DESCRIPTION:The Ghetto Fighters’ House invites you to a book discussion on:Survival on the Margins: Polish Jewish Refugees in the Wartime Soviet Union by Eliyana R. Adler \nSurvival on the Margins is the first book in English to focus on the experiences of the Polish Jews who fled into the USSR at the start of the Second World War. They faced difficult decisions and trying conditions there. Many succumbed to hunger or epidemic disease. Yet this group eventually comprised the largest proportion of Polish Jewish survivors of the war. However\, their story has not been widely told. \nJoin Eliyana Adler discussing her recent book in conversation with Natalia Aleksiun. \nThis program is in partnership with the Institute for the History of Polish Jewry\, the Jewish Historical Institute\, Remember the Women Institute\, the Rabin Chair Forum\, Classrooms Without Borders and the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center.

SUMMARY:Rethinking the 'Final Solution' and the Wannsee Conference: Marking the 80th Anniversary of the Transport of 999 Jewish Women to Auschwitz
DESCRIPTION:The Ghetto Fighters’ House invites you to the final session in a four part series:Rethinking the ‘Final Solution’ and the Wannsee Conference: Marking the 80th Anniversary of the Transport of 999 Jewish Women to Auschwitz: The Beginning of the Systematic Annihilation of the Jews \nWith Guest Speakers: \nProf. Heather Dune Macadam \n“999: The Extraordinary Young Women of the First Official Jewish Transport to Auschwitz” \nProf. Hanna Yablonka \n“Three Years Without a Name: Auschwitz 1942-1945” \nIf the Wannsee Conference discussed plans to target young Jewish women as part of its Final Solution protocol that part of the minutes was destroyed. What we do know is that a few weeks after that meeting\, Himmler ordered the creation of a women’s camp in Auschwitz. So began the official systematic annihilation of Jews\, which attacked\, first and foremost\, unmarried Jewish girls and young women\, between the ages of 16 and 32. \nHeather Dune Macadam\, author of the book 999: The Extraordinary Young Women of the First Official Jewish Transport to Auschwitz\, will speak about her research for the book and the soon to be released film 999. She reveals these young women’s poignant stories\, drawing on extensive interviews with survivors\, and consulting with historians\, witnesses\, and relatives of those first deportees to create an important addition to Holocaust literature and women’s history. \nOne of the women on the transport from Poprad\, Slovakia was Prof. Hanna Yablonka’s aunt\, Lila Klein\, from the nearby town of Levoča\, in the Tatra Mountains. Another young woman from the same town was Yuci [Jozi] Foldi (in Slovak Julia Skodova). She was one of the few women who survived the transport. Her testimony\, therefore\, is extraordinary because she was a witness to what Hanna Yablonka has described as the “archeology of Auschwitz” – the step-by-step implementation of the Final Solution in this camp. In her presentation\, Yablonka will discuss the preparations to publish Skodova’s book\, Three Years Without a Name: Auschwitz 1942-1945\, the unique experience of Slovakian Jews in the history of the Final Solution\, including her family’s personal story\, and the tragic fate of Julia Skodova. \nThis series is in partnership with Liberation 75\, Remember the Women Institute\, the Rabin Chair Forum\, Classrooms Without Borders\, the House of the Wannsee Conference Memorial and Educational Site\, and the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Center.
