SUMMARY:CWB Holocaust Remembrance Day: 2024 Community Wide Teach In January 26th 2024
DESCRIPTION:2024 Holocaust Remembrance and Education\nRecognizing the Extraordinary Courage of\nVictims and Survivors of the Holocaust\n \nFlowering meadow with butterflies – a painting by Dorit Weiserová\, a young girl imprisoned in the Terezín (Theresienstadt) ghetto. Dorit was born in 1932. She was killed in 1944 in the Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Death Camp (1940-1945). Credit: The Jewish Museum in Prague \n\nThe theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 is Recognizing the Extraordinary Courage of Victims and Survivors of the Holocaust \nRecognizing January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—the United Nations General Assembly calls upon every member state to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of others persecuted by Nazism. The aim is to foster remembrance and develop educational programs that prevent future genocides. \nAt CWB\, we believe that the foundation for this prevention begins in the classroom. We extend our gratitude for your commitment to inspiring students by promoting universal human values—diversity\, altruism\, forgiveness\, courage\, respect\, and faith in humanity. \n\nCWB is dedicated to curating Resources\, Lesson Plans\, and Teaching Tools to facilitate your Classroom Instruction. \nUpon registration\, all participants will receive the curated resources for our Community Wide Teach-In.\n\nWe encourage all educators to teach the lessons of the Holocaust to combat antisemitism\, genocide\, and hate. Our transformative educational opportunities focus on diversity\, inclusion\, and respect.\n  \nFreedom\, a concept interpreted differently by each individual\, is at the heart of this year’s theme. In every genocide\, the targeted victims experience a gradual erosion and removal of their freedom before facing atrocities. Professor Gregory Stanton’s ten stages of genocide underscore that genocide never occurs spontaneously; it is fueled by circumstances that create a climate conducive to such atrocities. \nPerpetrator regimes not only strip the freedom of their targeted populations but also restrict the freedoms of others to suppress opposition. Despite this\, in every genocide\, there are courageous individuals who risk their own freedom to help others\, preserve freedom\, or stand up against oppressive regimes. \nHolocaust Memorial Day 2024 holds particular significance as it marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. \nDespite the lessons learned from past genocides\, the world witnessed the fragile freedom in Rwanda shattered\, resulting in the murder of over one million Tutsis in just one hundred days. \nThis tragic event emphasizes the ongoing relevance of Holocaust education in preventing the recurrence of such atrocities.

SUMMARY:Post Film Discussion: Resistance: They Fought Back Featuring: Paula S. Apsell - Executive Producer\, Co-Director in Conversation with Dr. Michael Berenbaum
DESCRIPTION:As we commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, CWB is honored to present the NEW documentary ‘Resistance: They Fought Back.’ \nJoin us for this event as we unveil tales of resilience and courage\, remembering and reflecting on the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity. \nThe Film link will be delivered to registrants 3 days before our engaging post-film discussion \n“People have this myth stuck in their heads that Jews went to their deaths like sheep to the slaughter. But this is where the real story begins… Jews did not go as sheep to the slaughter… They fought back.” Professor Richard Freund \nWe’ve all heard of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising\, but most people have no idea how widespread and prevalent Jewish resistance to Nazi barbarism was. Instead\, it’s widely believed “Jews went to their deaths like sheep to the slaughter.” Filmed in Poland\, Lithuania\, Latvia\, Israel\, and the U.S.\, Resistance – They Fought Back provides a much-needed corrective to this myth of Jewish passivity. There were uprisings in ghettos large and small\, rebellions in death camps\, and thousands of Jews fought Nazis in the forests. Everywhere in Eastern Europe\, Jews waged campaigns of non-violent resistance against the Nazis. \nWe were taught that Jews went like sheep to the slaughter. \nWe were taught a Nazi lie. \nFeaturing: Paula S. Apsell – Executive Producer\, Co-Director \n\nFor 33 years\, Paula Apsell was the senior executive producer of the PBS NOVA science series. Prior to that\, she produced and directed a dozen NOVA episodes\, and was a Fellow in the Public Understanding of Science at MIT. During her long tenure at NOVA\, Paula was responsible for supervising more than 600 documentaries on a wide variety of subjects in the sciences\, and one\, The Bible’s Buried Secrets\, an exploration of the archeology of the Hebrew Bible\, with partial funding provided by the Righteous Persons Foundation. She also co-directed and executive produced one of the most watched NOVA episodes\, Holocaust Escape Tunnel. During her tenure\, NOVA won every major broadcasting award\, including the Emmy\, the Peabody\, the duPont-Columbia University Gold and Silver Batons\, and an Academy Award nomination for Special Effects. In 2018 she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Emmy of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. \nFacilitated by Dr. Michael Berenbaum \n\n\nDr. Michael Berenbaum is a writer\, lecturer\, and teacher consulting in the conceptual development of museums and historical films. He is director of the Sigi Ziering Institute: Exploring the Ethical and Religious Implications of the Holocaust at the American Jewish University\, where he is also a Professor of Jewish Studies. \nHe was the Executive Editor of the Second Edition of the Encyclopedia Judaica that reworked\, transformed\, improved\, broadened and deepened\, the now classic 1972 work and consists of 22 volumes\, sixteen million words with 25\,000 individual contributions to Jewish knowledge. For three years\, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. He was the Director of the United States Holocaust Research Institute at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Hymen Goldman Adjunct Professor of Theology at Georgetown University in Washington\, D.C. From 1988–93 he served as Project Director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, overseeing its creation. He also served as Deputy Director of the President’s Commission on the Holocaust\, where he authored its Report to the President. \nBerenbaum is the author and editor of twenty books\, scores of scholarly articles\, and hundreds of journalistic pieces. His most recent books include: Not Your Father’s Antisemitism\, A Promise to Remember: The Holocaust in the Words and Voices of Its Survivors and After the Passion Has Passed: American Religious Consequences\, a collection of essays on Jews\, Judaism and Christianity\, Religious Tolerance and Pluralism occasioned by the controversy that swirled around Mel Gibson’s film\, The Passion. He was the conceptual developer on the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Educational Center and played a similar function as conceptual developer and chief curator of the Belzec Memorial at the site of the Death Camp. He is currently at work on the Memorial Museum to Macedonian Jewry in Skopje\, the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum\, and the Holocaust and Humanity Center in Cincinnati\, Ohio. \n\nUnlock the anticipation – Film link delivered to registrants 3 days before our engaging post-film discussion \nThank you to our partners:

Participants will explore the Jewish claim through archaeological\, historical\, and genetic evidence spanning the past 3\,000 years. The impact of the Land of Israel on the Jewish faith\, the rise and actions of the Jewish national movement (Zionism)\, the attainment of political sovereignty\, and territorial acquisition through defensive wars will be considered. \nParticipants will gain an understanding of the unbroken historic and religious connections between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel/Palestine\, including the First and Second Jewish commonwealths in antiquity. The session will also delve into the status of Jewish life in Palestine after the loss of national sovereignty and the subsequent Roman destruction of the Second Temple. Focus will be placed on the continuity of a Jewish demographic presence in the country\, persisting even after the great exile by the Romans and tenaciously clung to for 1900 years until the renewal of national sovereignty with the establishment of Israel in 1948. \nAvi Ben-Hur \n \nScholar in Residence \nA Brooklyn native\, Avi Ben-Hur moved to Israel in 1983. SUMMARY:"One person can make a difference" with Jeannie Smith
DESCRIPTION:“One person can make a difference” with Jeannie Smith: \nA follow up to the CWB\nDecember 10 Pittsburgh premier of Irena’s\nVow\n  \n“I did not ask myself\, ‘Should I do this? But how will I do this?’ Every step of my childhood had brought me to this crossroads. I must take the right path\, or I will no longer be myself.  You must understand that I did not become a resistance fighter\, a smuggler of Jews\, a defier of the SS and the Nazis all at once. One’s first steps are always small.” \nWhen we acknowledge that everything we do affects someone else for either good or bad\, it opens our eyes. Understanding this is the antidote to how easy it is to become lulled into thinking that our actions are not enough and will not matter.  \nWhen we choose to do nothing — nothing is what we will reap. \nJeannie Smith \n \nJeannie Smith is the daughter of Polish rescuer Irene Gut Opdyke\, who received international recognition for her actions during the Holocaust while working for a high-ranking German official. \nIrene’s story became a nationally acclaimed Broadway play\, “Irena’s Vow.” Starring Tovah Feldshuh. Irena’s Vow has recently been made into a full length movie. \nIrene’s book – “In My Hands” – memories of a Holocaust rescuer from Random House gives a detailed account of her life during WWII and is used in classrooms around the country. \nThe Israeli Holocaust Commission named Irene one of the Righteous Among the Nations and received the Israel Medal of Honor at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. \nJeannie is a recipient of the 2015 Civil Rights award given by the Anti-Defamation League and an honorary member of the Jewish Federation of North America. Jeannie speaks for the Washington and Oregon Holocaust Speakers Bureau and many other organizations across the country and Europe.  \nShe has worked with the New York Polish Embassy regarding Polish/Jewish relations. Jeannie resides in Washington State with her husband\, Gary. She’s a mother of three sons\, a foster parent\, a grandmother of five\, and a surrogate mother to over 60 more. \nThe story she shares speaks to the power of love and encourages an undeniable truth: “One person can and does make a difference!” It speaks to the horrors and hate of the Holocaust and brings a message of faith\, love\, and hope that good can triumph over evil. It proclaims the conviction that\, one by one\, we can say no to hatred\, persecution\, and prejudice. \nLove is the greatest weapon we have;  Hate is easy – it takes courage to Love.

SUMMARY:A Virtual Evening with New York Times Bestselling Author Dani Shapiro in Conversationwith Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff on her memoir\, Inheritance:
DESCRIPTION:The Holocaust Teacher Institute Is Proud to Announce The Leslie and Susan Gonda (Goldschmied) Foundation Holocaust/Jewish Themed Sunday Salon Series\nA Virtual Evening with New York Times Bestselling Author Dani Shapiro in Conversation with Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff on her memoir\, Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy\, Paternity and Love A National Jewish Book Award Winner\n \nInheritance\, Shapiro’s tenth book and fifth memoir\, is a quest to uncover a family mystery involving her identity. This time around\, the catalyst is a genetic spit test taken out of idle curiosity in 2016. At age 54\, Shapiro is shocked to learn that the devout Orthodox Jewish stockbroker she thought was her biological father — who taught her about the Jewish people\, who inspired her to study about the Holocaust\, Paul Shapiro\, the man who died in that car accident — wasn’t a blood relative! \nShapiro is shaken to her core by this discovery. If Paul wasn’t her real father and she isn’t who she thinks she is\, then who is she? Where did the non-Ashkenazi French\, Irish\, English\, and German 48 percent of her DNA come from? And\, even more upsetting: Did her parents know this and deliberately hide it from her?

SUMMARY:“Bridge Over Troubled Water”: Solidarity and Civic Responsibility in Times of Crisis: Under Beslenei’s Sky: A Tale of Courage
DESCRIPTION:The Ghetto Fighters’ House invites you to a new series:\n“Bridge Over Troubled Water”: Solidarity and Civic Responsibility in Times of Crisis\nJoin us for the second program\n Under Beslenei’s Sky: A Tale of Courage\nOpening Remarks: \nYigal Cohen – CEO of the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum \nGuest Speakers: \nDavid Shawgen – Research Director of the Circassian Museum in Kfar-Kama \nZoher Thawcho – Initiator of the Film “A Tale from Beslenei” and Founder of the Circassian Museum in Kfar-Kama \nLana Harshuk – Circassian-Israeli Educator at the Anne Frank High School in the Galilee \nPre-screening: \n“A Tale from Beslenei” Program Description:  \nFor our second program\, we are honored to have a distinguished panel of guest speakers that will collectively reveal the remarkable\, unknown heroic story of Beslenei\, a small village at the heart of the Caucasus. During the Holocaust\, the Circassian-Muslim people of Beslenei adopted orphaned children\, some of whom were Jewish\, who had fled the siege of Leningrad\, putting their entire community at risk. \nYigal Cohen\, museum CEO and former principal of the Anne Frank high school in the Galilee\, has developed a profound interest in Circassian history\, particularly the 1864 Circassian Genocide\, sparked by meaningful encounters with members of the Circassian community at school. Upon discovering the unique story of the village\, he recognized its educational value and dedicated himself to sharing it with students and beyond. \nDavid Shawgen\, academic advisor and researcher at the Circassian Museum in Kfar Kama\, will provide a comprehensive overview of Circassian history and culture and focus on the significant events that unfolded in Beslenei during April 1942. \nZoher Thawcho\, a Circassian-Israeli who was similarly drawn to this story\, will share clips of his film “A Tale from Beslenei” and discuss the production process of the film\, as well as his personal perspective on the story that came to life during the film’s creation. \nLana Harshuk\, a Circassian-Israeli educator at the Anne Frank high school\, will weave together her identity and the history of her people\, revealing their impact on her educational philosophy. Guided by the belief that understanding diverse cultures can combat hatred\, Lana will explain how hatred is often a result of ignorance\, and how she uses this story to encourage empathy and foster respect for others. \nThere will be a pre-screening of the documentary film for all registrants. \nThis program is in partnership with the Circassian Historical Museum in Israel\, the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre\, Classrooms Without Borders\, and the Rabin Chair Forum at George Washington University.

These themes collectively symbolize the holiday’s significance in Jewish tradition\, emphasizing the enduring values and lessons it imparts. \nIrena’s Vow stands as a powerful reminder of the indomitable human spirit in the face of the Holocaust’s darkness\, illuminating the triumph of courage\, compassion\, and resilience in the most challenging of times connecting us \n\n\nIn this captivating narrative featuring Sophie Nélisse\, Dougray Scott\, Andrzej Seweryn\, and Maciek Nawrocki\, the true story of Irena Gut Opdyke unfolds. This tale revolves around the resilience of the human spirit in the face of immense tragedy. Irena Gut\, a 19-year-old\, is unexpectedly promoted to housekeeper in a Nazi officer’s home just as the Jewish ghetto faces imminent liquidation. Fueled by a determination to save twelve Jewish workers\, she makes a bold decision to shelter them in the safest place she can think of: the basement of the German commandant’s house. Over the next two years\, Irena relies on her wit\, humor\, and unwavering courage to conceal her friends until the conclusion of the German occupation. Her story is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit\, marked by the incredible feats of bravery amidst a backdrop of Nazi parties\, a daring blackmail scheme\, and the birth of a child. Irena Gut Opdyke’s journey is undoubtedly one of the most inspirational stories of our time. \n\n\n\nThank you to our partners:

DESCRIPTION:Association of Jewish Libraries Capital Area Chapter and Classrooms without Borders with the support of AJL National present\nA Daughter’s Kaddish\nwith author Sarah Birnbach\nA woman breaks with Jewish tradition to honor her late father in this moving memoir of faith\, grief\, and transformation. \n\nA Daughter’s Kaddish recounts Sarah Birnbach’s year-long odyssey to persevere through an unfamiliar world of Jewish prayer. Throughout her year of devotion\, Sarah takes comfort in the loving memories of her childhood while at the same time grappling with some very painful ones—ultimately discovering how the path of faith and grief can lead to true healing. \n \nSarah Birnbach embarked on her encore career as a writer in 2015 after successful careers as a human resource management consultant and a licensed clinical social worker. SUMMARY:The Panama Affair: Financial Scandal\, Political Corruption and the Rise of Modern Anti-Semitism in 19th century France
DESCRIPTION:The French anti-Semitic movement of the 1890s- typically associated with the Dreyfus affair- was in fact launched by a different scandal. In the 1892-93 Panama scandal\, the anti-Semitic movement first coalesced over a broadly shared outrage about a corrupt foreign investment scheme in which hundreds of thousands of ordinary investors lost their fortunes. Seeing the scandal as revealing Jews’ nefarious control of France’s democratic institutions\, anti- Semitic leaders channeled the populist impulse in France into a politically potent kind of anti- Jewish xenophobia. This presentation looks anew at the affair as a formative moment in the history of anti-Semitism\, and provides a new perspective on anti-Semitic movement’s critique of liberal democracy\, capitalism\, and globalization. \nWith Lisa Leff\, Professor of History\, American University and Director\, Mandel Center for Advanced Holocause Studies\, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum \n \nBefore joining the Museum\, she spent nearly two decades as a professor\, first at Southwestern University in Georgetown\, Texas\, and then at American University in Washington\, DC\, where she is still on the faculty as a Professor of History. At American\, she also served as acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and acting dean of Academic Affairs and senior vice provost. She won teaching awards at Southwestern in 2007 and at American in 2017\, when she was named Scholar-Teacher of the Year. \nDr. Leff is a historian of modern European and modern Jewish history. Her research focuses on the Jews of modern France from the time of the French Revolution to the present. She is especially interested in the history of archives\, modern political ideas\, nationalism\, internationalism\, imperialism\, and antisemitism. She has presented her work widely around the world\, in both academic and nonacademic settings. \nDr. Leff is a past president of the Society for French Historical Studies and is a member of the American Historical Association and the Association for Jewish Studies. She currently serves on the editorial board of the journals Jewish Quarterly Review\, Jewish Social Studies\, and Jewish History. She is also an elected fellow of the American Academy for Jewish Research. \nModerated by Michal Rose Friedman\, Jack Buncher Professor of Jewish Studies\, Department of History\, Carnegie Mellon University

SUMMARY:“Bridge Over Troubled Water”: Solidarity and Civic Responsibility in Times of Crisis Session 1: A Nation Takes Action: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Rescue of the Jews in Denmark During the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE NOVEMBER 19TH\, 2023\n  \n“Bridge Over Troubled Water”: Solidarity and Civic Responsibility in Times of Crisis\nSession 1:\nA Nation Takes Action: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Rescue of the Jews in Denmark During the Holocaust\n\n\nIn these turbulent times\, we find strength in the bonds we share with our friends as well as in our commitment to a mission of education\, sharing inspiring stories of bravery and resilience\, and eliminating all forms of hatred. \nThe museum’s doors are currently closed to the public\, and due to our location near the Israeli northern border we had to move our unique and original collections to a safe shelter\, however we are operating our behind-the-scenes efforts to the best of our capacity. We decided to step outside the museum and meet face-to-face with people\, especially with individuals who have been forced to abandon their homes\, becoming refugees in their own country. Some of our employees\, including our CEO\, Yigal Cohen\, found themselves in this situation. We’ve taken the initiative to create a live performance centered on music and storytelling\, with the intent of presenting it to them in the hotels and community centers where they now reside\, in the hopes of offering consolation and lifting their spirits. \n\nThe new Talking Memory series represents our unwavering commitment to maintaining meaningful connections with you\, our friends from around the world\, with the intention of cultivating a shared sense of unity among us. We believe that this series represents a powerful response to current events\, while also serving as a profound testament to the strength of civil society today.\nThe first session\, taking place on November 19\, 2023\, will feature the following lineup:Opening Remarks:\nAmbassador of Denmark\, H.E. Thomas Winkler\n\nGuest Speakers:\nDr. Bo Lidegaard\nDr. Judith S. Goldstein\nRabbi Jair Melchior \nScreening: Voices in the Void \nProgram Description:\nWe are honored to have the Ambassador of Denmark\, H.E. Thomas Winkler to open this special commemoration program about a most incredible act of rescue. Almost all the seven thousand Jews living in Nazi occupied Denmark\, managed to escape the Holocaust. What made Denmark the exception to the systemized horror? Bo Lidegaard\, an historian who has researched the subject\, presents a new explanation of the rescue based on more than ten years of historical research. Dr. Judith Goldstein\, Founder and Executive Director Emeritus of ”Humanity in Action”\, will introduce us to the work of the non profit organization\, including the production of the animated documentary ”Voices in the Void”\, which is part of the film series Traces: Portraits of Resistance\, Survival and Resolve. We will have the opportunity to see a screening of the film during the program. Afterwards\, Rabbi Jair Melchior\, Chief Rabbi of Denmark\, will share the story of his grandfather\, Rabbi Bent Melchior who was rescued on one of the fishing boats who sailed to Sweden\, in relation to the moral lessons and insights gained by learning about this unique example of rescue during the Holocaust. \nThis program is in partnership with the Embassy of Denmark in Tel Aviv\, Humanity in Action\, the Danish Jewish Museum\, the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center\, Classrooms without Borders\, and the Rabin Chair Forum at George Washington University. \nMay peaceful days come soon. \n\n2 PM EST | 8 PM CEST | 9 PM Israel

Although they are often seen flying on canvases\, in life they sloughed through some of the most devastating years of Jewish history\, navigating pogroms\, the Russian Revolution\, and the Holocaust. \nSpecial Events\nOctober 17 at 7pm: A symposium with speakers who will survey Marc Chagall’s works\, examine the challenging time during which he lived\, and explore the historical devastation of the Holocaust and how lessons of history resonate inside the contemporary issues of equality\, tolerance\, and hope.\n\nOctober 28: Opening Night with a post-show champagne reception\nOctober 29: Sunday Q&A with the cast and crew\nNovember 1 at 6:30 pm: Social Q pre-show reception at Butterjoint\nNovember 2 at 7pm: Pre-show wine tasting with the Quantum Quaff\nNovember 18: Psychological post-show discussion of the characters at Quantum on the Couch\n\n\nViolins of Hope\nThe show will be paired with Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh\, Pittsburgh’s exhibition of instruments rescued from the Holocaust. Each instrument has a unique and emotional history that tells the story of perseverance and hope\, and one of them\, special to the Pittsburgh community\, will be played live in the show. The project depicts the triumphant survivors of the 20th century’s darkest times while celebrating humanity’s ability to rebound from even the hardest depravity. The marriage of these two works is sure to create an educational and impactful journey for audience members to enjoy.

SUMMARY:The Holocaust as an Interdisciplinary Tapestry
DESCRIPTION:An 8 Part Series exploring the multifaceted discipline of Holocaust Studies through unique and previously unexplored lenses\n  \nClassrooms Without Borders\, in coordination with Tali Nates\, Founder and Director of the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre\, Madene Shachar\, Director\, “Talking Memory” online lecture series & International Educational Programs the Ghetto Fighters’ House\, Esther Toporek Finder\, member of the GSI Coordinating Council\, Generations of the Shoah and in partnership with Liberation75 is pleased to embark on this new innovative series “The Holocaust as an Interdisciplinary Tapestry”. \nThis 8 part series will engage with scholars and experts who grapple with themes related to Holocaust studies. The series will explore the multifaceted discipline of Holocaust Studies through different lenses. The series will include scholars whose research and publications shed new light in this field of study that continues to grow and develop. Our experts will challenge us to understand the causes\, impacts\, and legacies of the Holocaust. \nOctober’s Event will feature:\nGendering the Holocaust with Andrea Pető\nAn introduction to the rich history of researching the Holocaust. Research on women and the Holocaust developed driven by the political strategy formulated by Joan Ringelheim in 1983 that in failing to recognize that men and women suffer differently we “lose the lives of women for a second time”. A strong professional alliance was built between the second wave of the women’s movement and those who wanted to rewrite or revise women’s history. I analyze the consequences that the scholarship on women and the Holocaust followed the same epistemological route as women’s history writing in general. It started to collect the facts – making women visible and collecting evidence – and establish the history of women’s participation in\, for example\, the ghetto and among the Jewish resistance movements building up a considerable scholarship by now. The talk closes by analyzing the causes and actors of the recent illiberal challenge on Holocaust Studies and its consequences on gendering the Holocaust. \nAndrea Pető \n \nAndrea Pető is Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University\, Vienna\, Austria\, and a Doctor of Science of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Her works on gender\, politics\, Holocaust and war have been translated into 23 languages. She edited three pioneering books in the field of Jewish Studies with Louise Hecht\, Karoline Krasuska Women and Holocaust: New Perspectives and Challenges. IBL\, Warsawa\, 2015.\, and with Szapor\, Judith\, Hametz\, Maura\, Calloni\, Marina\, Jewish Intellectual Women in Central Europe 1860-2000. The Edwin Mellen Press\, 2012.\, with Helga Thorson The Future of Holocaust Memorialisation. Confronting Racism\, Anti-Semitism\, and Homophobia Through Memory Work. Tom Lantos Institute\, Budapest\, 2015. Her recent monographs are: Women in the Arrow Cross Party (Palgrave\, 2020)\, Forgotten Massacre\, Budapest in 1944 (DeGruyter 2021). She the editor-in-chief of East European Holocaust Studies (DeGruyter). In 2018 she was awarded the 2018 All European Academies (ALLEA) Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values and 2022 University of Oslo Human Rights Award. She is Doctor Honoris Causa of Södertörn University\, Stockholm\, Sweden. \n \nTali Nates is the founder and director of the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre (JHGC) and Chair of the South African Holocaust & Genocide Foundation (SAHGF). She is a historian who lectures internationally on Holocaust and genocide education\, memory\, reconciliation\, and human rights. Born to a family of Holocaust survivors\, her father and uncle were saved by Oskar Schindler. Tali has been involved in the creation and production of dozens of documentary films\, published many articles and contributed chapters to different books among them God\, Faith & Identity from the Ashes: Reflections of Children and Grandchildren of Holocaust Survivors (2015)\, Remembering The Holocaust in Educational Settings (2018)\, Conceptualizing Mass Violence\, Representations\, Recollections\, and Reinterpretations (2021) and The Routledge Handbook of Memory Activism (2023). \nIn 2021 she was part of the 12-member Expert Group of the Malmö Forum\, serving in an advisory capacity to the Secretariat of the Malmö Forum on their programme on Holocaust remembrance\, education and actions to combat antisemitism. Tali serves on many Advisory and Academic Boards including that of the Contested Histories Initiative\, the Interdisciplinary Academic Journal of Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center and the Academic Advisory Group of the School of Social and Health Sciences\, Monash University (IIEMSA)\, South Africa. \nIn 2010\, Tali was chosen as one of the top 100 newsworthy and noteworthy women in \nSouth Africa by the Mail & Guardian newspaper and won many awards including the Kia Community Service Award (South Africa\, 2015)\, the Gratias Agit Award (2020\, Czech Republic)\, the Austrian Holocaust Memorial Award (2021) and the Goethe Medal (2022\, Germany). \nThank you to our Partners:\n \n \n \n \n \nFinal Events in this Series:  \n\nNovember 16 2023 Memory Studies: Museums and Memorials\n\nPast Events in this Series: \n\nFebruary 23 2023 Psychiatry and the Holocaust\nMarch 23 2023  Ethics and Law\nApril 27 2023 Education\nMay 18 2023 Film\nJune 15 2023 German Professionals and the Holocaust \nSept 21 Jewish studies

SUMMARY:CHRISTIANS & JEWS – FROM CONFLICT TO COEXISTENCE
DESCRIPTION:Today\, the nexus between Judaism and Christianity marks a high point in the history of Jewish-Christian relations. \nBut this was not always the case. Since the C2nd CE\, mainstream Christianity was resolutely anti-Jewish.\nThe myth of Jews as Christ-killers fuelled anti-Judaism and antisemitism through the Christian centuries and it was not until after the Holocaust that the Church embarked on a path towards reconciliation with the Jewish people.\nIn this short course we will trace the trajectory of Jewish-Christian relations from a position of conflict to one of coexistence. \nFor more than a decade\, Paul Forgasz was principal of the secondary (grades 7-12) campus of Mt Scopus College\, a large K-12 Jewish day school in Melbourne\, Australia. He also lectured in Bible and Jewish history at Monash University’s Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation and taught about Jewish education\, as well as school leadership\, in the university’s Faculty of Education. Since 2010\, Paul has also curated and led Jewish study tours to various European destinations under the auspices of the Jewish Museum of Australia. For most of his professional life\, Paul has also been actively involved in Jewish-Christian dialogue and he also works closely with teachers in the Catholic education sector.
